Hulga feels sorry for herself because she has lost her leg, wears glasses, and has a heart condition. She thinks she is above everyone else because of her education. She believes in nothing but she does have faith in her wooden leg and her education. When Manley who she sees is simple, steals her leg and humiliates her, this deprives her of the only two things she had faith in, her leg and her education.
