Oppose to Sending More Soldiers

1 Imagine a million of soldiers lying dead in front of your home, and their eyes staring at you as if you were the reason they died. How would you feel if the person lying there was your family member, your friend, or even just a person you knew? For centuries, war has been a part of history and people’s lives. According to Merriam Dictionary, war is “a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations.”  Is the blood and soul of millions of troops worth the fight?  I believe we shouldn’t send more troops to Afghanistan because of these reasons: it will not guarantee a successful war, more soldiers could die, our economy is in a recession, and people will be emotionally affected. As of right now Obama is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.

The United States had plans to launch a war with Afghanistan before we were attacked, but September eleventh called the plans to action. A few reasons why we are in Afghanistan today are to overthrow Al-Qaeda, to capture Usama bin Laden, and to conquer the Taliban. Al-Qaeda is an international terrorist network that was created by Usama bin Laden. This leads to why we need to capture Usama; he is the one who was behind the attack of 9/11.  The Taliban is another organization; they are the Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement. The Taliban is allies with Al-Qaeda.  Our mission is to destroy their bases and to capture bin Laden without hurting the Afghan people. Also, we don’t want the nuclear weapons in the hand of terrorists groups. Right now we have 62,000 troops, and the goal is to reach a number of 68,000 by the end of the year. McChrystal, the top US commander is Afghanistan, requested an additional 40,000 soldiers.

First, McChrystal said that if we don’t send more soldiers we will lose the war, but how can it guarantee a successful one?  People may think the more soldiers we have, the more we have a chance at winning the war. I don’t think we will win the war if we just send more soldiers, but we will need a better war strategy. I would agree to send more soldiers if there was at least an 85% chance or higher at winning the war, but we don’t even have a strategy. If we do send more troops whose to say how many more years we will have to wait to see the outcome of this drawn out war.

It would be awful to send 40,000 extra troops and still lose the war. When we could possibly save more lives by backing out of the war, then sacrificing over than 40,000 troops. Thousands of soldiers will have to risk their lives for a war that may not have a positive outcome. “For love of country they accepted death”, said James A. Garfield.

Third, the United States is in an economic recession. The amount we will have to spend on war will be over trillions of dollars. The more soldiers we have, the more we will spend on war equipment. So, how can we afford to spend money we don’t really have? The estimated “cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could total $2.4 trillion.” (Ken Dilanian) The money we use on war and to fix Afghanistan’s community could be used to help the people in the United States in need. Most of the Afghan people probably don’t even want us there.  In the United States there are people who don’t have jobs, don’t have anything to eat, and don’t even have a home. We should care more about our country’s needs more than fixing theirs. There are several problems that need to be fixed for example: healthcare, housing, and high utility bills. To sum it up, there are people in our country who can’t afford the cost of livings. “I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished”, said Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Don’t the citizens of the United States have a say in sending more soldiers or not? Over the years, people have been emotionally affected by war. I am actually affected myself. Worried, scared, hope, and happiness are all the feelings I get when I think about my fiancé in Iraq. I’m worried when he is out on a mission, scared he might have been injured, happy when I receive a phone call, and hope he will return home safe. These emotions are never ending from day to day. Imagine yourself waiting for that special someone for years to come home from war, but in the end he or she was shipped to another danger zone that may not have a chance to win against their enemies. How would you feel?

Overall, I’m trying to say that we don’t need to send more troops to Afghanistan. It could mean we will lose the war, but it may be for the best. Also, I’m not saying sending more troops is entirely a bad thing; there could be good possibilities of sending more troops. However, I am against an endless war, killing more soldiers, and putting our economy at risk.  Finally, how would I feel if the person lying there was my family member, my friend, or even just a person I knew? In the end, if my fiancé died in war, and was lying in front of my house dead. I would blame myself for not trying to stop Obama from sending more troops to Afghanistan.

that was a very strong opening line but i have to ask you this, how would you feel having millions of innocent lying dead in front of your home because there was no one to defend them. Ya it sucks seeing your love ones leave to go to a war that they probably don’t agree with, but they have to go we started this war we have to finish it.
