When you take a test are you so nervous that you forget your name, and start to bit your finger nails off? Because this test is the deciding factor for you pass or failed. Standardize Tests are assessment on students to measure their knowledge compared to other students, to see if they meet the learning requirements. But are we relying too heavily on the decisions of these tests? Are children feeling pressured to meet the expectations? Should this test be the deciding factor for promotion?

We are relying too heavily on standardized test. These tests are disadvantage to students. Some groups are offer more resources, like students from low income and minority groups are at higher risk of not passing, because of water-downed curriculum which base on test practice. According to Fair Test, students from low-income and minority-group backgrounds are more likely to be retained in grade, placed in a lower track, or put in special or remedial education programs when it is not necessary(“Fair Test”) . White, middle and upper class are more likely to succeed in college preparatory programs; as a result they show rapid progress.

On the other hand we need check and balances on our students said Paul Reville a Lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education, Chairman of the Massachusetts Education Reform Review Commission. He believes people need to keep testing to raise the standards for our students. In addition Standardized tests gives teacher determine lines on what to teach, and also tests provide help for parents to keep up with their children accuracy. Standardized testing gives parents a good idea of how their children are doing as compared to students across the country and locally. This can also indicate how your local area is doing compared against the national landscape (“Bright Hub “). However it forces teachers to instruct material on the test, therefore teachers feel great pressure to increase test score as a result students also feel immense pressure to score high.

There are other useful methods of assessment that are as reliable then standardized test. Using trained judges to decide the rate performance. Studies have shown that, with training, the level of agreement among judges (the “inter-rater reliability”) is high. As with multiple-choice tests, it is necessary to enact safeguards to ensure that race, class, gender, linguistic or other cultural biases do not affect evaluation (“Fair Test”).
