6          Do you want to get mugged? Do you want to be shot? Well imagine this; Mister Thomas was at a gas station with his girlfriend. His girlfriend went in to the gas station to get change for a hundred dollar bill. A young man had the change and was giving her the change for the hundred. Mister Thomas thought that the young man was trying to “get with” his girlfriend. He pulls out his gun and goes in to the gas station. Then he shoots the young man and he pulls his girlfriend. He was later caught and charged with attempted murder because the young man lived. He was only sentenced for nine years in prison. Now imagine being the young man staring down a barrel of a gun. Picture being shot feeling like you were left to die. Visualize going to hospital, getting out the hospital, and being told that the person who shot you only got sentenced nine years in prison due to the overcrowding in prison. Due to the overcrowding of prisons, many criminals like Mister Thomas are sentenced less. In the beginning of America , it was not always like this.

3              America has developed over the years through acts, laws, and etc. Because crime increased, America needed a place to confine people who were convicted of serious crimes. To create this place, the government needed to come up with a law, act, or etc. to have structures. This is also called a prison reform. Over many years there have been many prison reforms like Walnut Street Jail 1790, Eastern State Penitentiary 1829, Elmira Reformatory 1876, Leavenworth 1895, and Seagoville 1941. Walnut Street Jail 1790 provided the first prison ever in the United States of America , introduced prison clothes, pattern of the prison cells, and establish the basic principles for prisons. It also segregate criminals according to sex, age and crime convicted. Eastern State Penitentiary 1829 gave different prison clothes so that the prisoners could not see the other prisoners. Also was the most influential prison.  Elmira Reformatory 1876 made juvenile detentions for children so they could segregate the children from the adults. It also made women prisons and reformatory institutions for women to segregate women from the men. (Prison Reform History 1)   Leavenworth 1895 granted prisoners the right to work and sell their products or goods to the state for money towards their bail. Seagoville 1941 provided a penitentiary without walls based on treating crimes as diseases and offering different treatments after the criminal was classified by a type. Later the prison was run by a different warrant named David Ruiz who emphasized strict discipline. Then they sued David because the prison constituted no “cruel and unusual punishment” outlawed by the eighth amendment in the United States Constitution. It was the longest running criminals’ lawsuit in United States of America history.

Even though there have been many prison reforms, a prison reform is needed today. The prison reform that is needed today needs to address the need for more prisons. Prisons today are extremely overcrowded which causes a great deal of tension and conflict. Conflict and tension creates fights and other violent acts. Also some prisoners get out earlier due to the overcrowding of prisons (CQ Researcher 1). The prison reform that is needed today needs to deal with harsher limit to prisoner releases. “ Philadelphia suffered an unprecedented crime wave. In an eighteen month period, the city rearrested 9,732 defendants released by a federal judge, for new crimes including seventy nine murders, nine hundred fifty nine robberies, ninety rapes and 11,113 assaults (CQ Researcher 19). The prison reform that is needed today needs to attend to some way to reduce a life sentence prisoner cost down. It takes ninety thousand dollars a year to house one life sentence prisoner (Costs of the Death Penalty 1). The hundreds of dollars saved can be put towards the economy, government, or etc.

The beginning was a great way to catch my attention and make me want to read the whole paper. you are right about pepole receiving not enough years for the crimes they have committed. mister thomas should have gotten at least twenty years.

i believe that you should rework the sentence “… the government needs to create a law, act, or etc…” it makes it seem as though yu didnt do rsearch, which is cleay not the case because you have good suporting details,

this is a very good introduction it caught my attention.i also like how u used a vivid picture to get your main idea across.and i dont think people be sentenced less just because of overcrowded jails.

I think you should talk about the criminals that dont use any form of weapon for stealing. What im talking about is the criminals that find a nich in the system or get all these funds for there campaign to pass a bill to help the company that provided the funds. If im not clear whta im talking about is corrupted politicians what should be there penalty for being persuaded to try and pass a bill for tobacco companies just becuase they push them a decent amount of money lets hang them lol.

In your forth senence you should put in and to together. Your first paagraph is very strong and makes me angry just reading it. It is however very disappointed to hear the other side; why do we have so many people breaking the law, so that we cannot find a placed to put them.

Shorten your intro and get rid of “Mister.” Leave out the details of the shooting, and just go straight to “Imagine staring down the barrel of a gun.” This would be a great place to begin your essay.

Ditch the first line of this paragraph and start with the second. Be careful not to bury your most important information. How does giving the prisoners different clothes prevent them from seeing each other? the sentence that begins “Also was…” need correcting. Warrant named David??? This paper still needs a lot of revision.
