What do you think “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” means in the military? “Don’t ask” is defined as, applicants for enlistment will not be asked nor required to reveal their sexual orientation. “Don’t tell” is defined as; soldiers should not disclose or discuss their sexual orientation or conduct. According to President Obama, “I will end ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,” Mr. Obama told an audience of nearly 3,000 people at a fund-raising dinner for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay advocacy group. That is my commitment to you” (NY Times). I believe the policy should remain as it is. Why change something that has been in affect over fifteen years and was never an issue until now.

According to the military, “During World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the military defined homosexuality as a mental defect, and officially barred homosexuals from serving based on medical criteria” (about.com). I would not call it a mental defect, but that they are confused. I say that because either they do not know right from wrong, or they just chose to be that way. As I was reading, “It wasn’t until 1982 that the Department of Defense officially put in writing that homosexuality was incompatible with military service” (Powers, Rod). At one point in time, only men were allowed in the military. Back then, men were too embarrassed to utter a word about being gay. They had a tendency to keep it to themselves, because of their pride and they wanted to be respected for their manhood. Therefore, it was never an issue. After getting everything in order, the policy went into effect on October 1, 1993, signed by former president Bill Clinton during his tenure.

During Obama’s speech at the dinner, he stated, “we as a nation finally recognize relationships between two men or two women are just as real and admirable as relationships between a man and a woman, and when no one has to be afraid to be gay in America” (NY Times). Just because the relationship is recognized, does not mean it is acceptable. Christians that abide by the laws of the Bible are strongly against homosexuality. The military on the other hand, does not have a problem with homosexuals. They just prefer them to keep their sexuality to themselves. For instance, “However having sexual relations, or displaying romantic overtures with members of the same sex, or telling anyone about their sexual orientation is considered “homosexual conduct” under the policy and is a basis for involuntary discharge” (Powers, Rod). For example, more than 10,000 soldiers have been discharged because of their sexuality.

Many believe that the policy should remain the same. In most cases, an ideal soldier is considered a manly figure meaning masculine, strong, courageous, and brave. Honestly when someone thinks of a gay person, you think of a flamboyant man that acts like a woman, and a rough looking woman that acts like a man. In agreement with Donnelly, she said, “Donnelly claimed that homosexuals serving openly in the military “would be harmful to good-order discipline and morale” because it is “tantamount to saying that military men would be living with military women constantly with little or no privacy in conditions as what the law describes as forced intimacy” (The Huffington Post). What heterosexual male or female would want to shower or sleep next to a homosexual? Many think that would cause tension or even chaos. If anything, the military would want to keep peace within their own territory.

From gay rights to religious beliefs, the policy has caused such a controversy in this day and time. It have been proven that some military laws go along with the laws of the Bible. The Bible speaks against homosexuality just like the military. They both also go against adultery. The United States is not favorable in the eyes of some countries. Therefore, if they knew we had homosexuals in the military that may cause them to want to attack us more. That is because many countries are avidly against homosexuality. They do not accept it period. Some countries even killed homosexuals. The United States is one of the few that accepts and tolerates homosexuality.

The military cannot control what others do, but they can enforce their laws and those who are enlisted have to follow those laws. Some people try to say the military discriminates against gays and lesbians, which is not true. For example, they have a dress code soldiers have to follow, if they fail to do so, then they are penalized for it. That is not discriminating; it is just a rule that is strictly enforced, just like the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Some even say the military is bias because more women have been discharged than men. However, that is because women are more open with their sexuality than men are. In defense of homosexuals, there is no tolerance for harassment against homosexuals in the military. There are consequences for those who use ill manner language about or towards a homosexuals

In the mid 90’s, early 2000, homosexuals were everywhere and were proudly displaying it. That is when gay rights movements hit the TV stations and news channels. Gay activists are hounding President Obama because they want him to keep his word. He may be able to suggest it, but he cannot pass it. “The Supreme Court today declined to hear a constitutional challenge to the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy banning openly gay people from serving in the U.S. military, a move that could effectively leave it to the Obama administration to resolve the long-controversial issue” (The Washington Post). The majority of older Americans do not believe in homosexuality. Since, the House of Representatives and Senates is made of older people Obama’s efforts will most likely fail.

Many people hope passing the law fails. Why change something now that has been in act for over fifteen years? Stand up for what is right, not for what is immoral. President Obama cannot please everybody. I say this because at the end of the day, I would want to be fighting the enemy, not the American that sleeps next to me.

Check your reference. I think that the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy requires that people keep their private lives private. No one should be allowed to ask you about your sexual preferences when you apply for a job or enter the military.
Where did you get this information about WWII?
This argument needs more development. Is this policy the best way to deal with gays in the military? What other options have been suggested or tried? Why is this a problem? Explain more about this issue. What caused this policy change?
Title does not give the reader a clear idea about the topic.
Some people can’t help how they feel. It’s really no one’s business anyways whether to know if their gay or not. If everyone would mind their own business no one would have this problem.
The title needs to be a little more clearer. The first paragraph needs to maybe reworded so that the reader may get a more clear understanding of what you mean. Check the spacing between your words
I like the idea that you brought the military into this paper because it shows that you are not afraid to talk about the facts at hand. But if you are going to put the Bible into this paper I believe you should elaborate on it a little more.
I think you are confused about your topic and the paper does not provide enough information to actually have a solid topic. because it seems as if your jumping from one subject to another. not clear at all.
You need to give more supporting details about homosexuality and why it wasn’t an issue until they were given rights. You need to tell why you think should remain the way that it is. Do you think homosexuality should be allowed???
In paragraph three, in that quote. you said a man and woman, and when no one has to be afraid to be gay in American. The speaker might of said it like this but i was going to bring it to your attention in case you typo’ed. should when be taken out? or am i reading wrong?
Do you mean I won’t tell?
Make sure that you state your thesis in the first paragraph. The reader needs to know what stance you are taking on this issue. Make sure it’s something that reasonable people would disagree about.

Don’t assume that your reader knows what you mean when you say “It has been proven…..” Explain how it has been proven. Give specific details. Check the word “inflict.” It doesn’t seem to fit here.
