Have you ever gazed into the sky and just marveled about how our universe works? Have you ever wondered if there is life outside of our realm? For thousands of years people have reached into the sky trying to grasp the knowledge that lies only a few thousand miles out of our atmosphere. Since the world came to be there have been attempts to reach space, from the tower of Babble to successful moon landing in the Apollo missions. As Americans we have seen many memorable moments in space both heroic and tragic. But from that we have gained a since of pride of our nation for accomplishing this, and developing all the useful technological advances that we have gained from space travel. But America is currently in a economic recession and our space program has taken a slight pause. But I believe that space travel and the money that is funded to NASA will help our economy.

Now on the other side of the argument people think that space travel is a waste of money. Lots of people fell this way mainly to the fact that space travel is so expensive. The recent Ares 1 rocket is a small part in a eighty billion dollar constellation space exploration that is designed to travel to mars. Many people believe this money should be used to solve our economic problems, for instance social security. It’s estimated that in the next sixty years our social security money will be depleted leaving us with no retirement. Along with the eighty billion for Ares project, NASA’s annual budget will be raised from eighteen million to twenty-one million per year for the next five years. What does this mean for the average man? It means that our taxes might go up. But it might seem that all this money will coast us now, in the long run all the discoveries that we will get from this will in fact boost our economy and hopefully take us out of this recession.

Although it may look at space travel as a waste of our government’s money given our economic crisis, and that the government should spend our money more practically like in health care or social security. “A Gallup Poll found that fifty-eight percent believe the space program has produced enough benefits to justify its casts, and sixty percent thought spending on space should remain at current levels.” When it comes down to it Space travel has help out our lives more that you may notice. Most people think that the only things that NASA and space travel has ever come up with is the zip log bag and tang the powdered drink. In fact NASA has come up with so much more that just a fruity drink, they have come up satellite radio, invisible and even the ear thermometer. In the Apollo mission to the moon NASA scientists developed foam that helped spring the astronauts in space. Now Athletic shoe companies have adopted the technology calling them shoe insoles. Another very useful invention that we have obtained from space travel and NASA is water filters. In the 1950s NASA was testing a method of keeping water clean longer in sever conditions. They developed this by putting charcoal in the water which contains silver ions that neutralize pathogens in the water. Along with killing bacteria in the water, the filters also prevent further bacterial growth. So with all the money spent in space travel we have had many inventions that come into play in our everyday life.

But some people may say that America has gotten lax when it comes to advances for our space travel expeditions. But according to Neil Tyson there is still hope. He stated that there are still people that believe in exploration it will raise dreams for people to reach out and try to expand our technology. As long as there is people still dreaming and still moving forward there will always be room for exploration. From this I believe that we shouldn’t give up on those dreams and we should always support those people have those dreams. That is was what our country is biased on dreams so why should we give up on the dreams of tomorrow. America needs to explore space it keeps us dreaming and I believe that’s what makes us so great.

I really like your opening.. I noticed that you wrote America has gained a since of pride, and it should be sense. I can’t say anthing bad about your opening paragraph because I feel that it really draws the reader in. I know I want to read more!
When you said “But it might seem that all this money will coast us now” Did you mean to say cost? And It’s interesting that you said it could take us out of a recession…do you know what kind of descoveries could help us boost our economy?
“For thousands of years people have reached into the sky trying to grasp the knowledge that lies only a few thousand miles out of our atmosphere.” That was very impressive! You’re opening is very captivating it caught my attention right away. Its great!
I like the article you could also mention how space travel could create jobs to help our economy kinda like the airplane project that Alabama is bidding on right now. Also, I know a little of topic, a real attention grabber for me was at the beginning when you mention other life out there. Some people actually believe aliens have visted us in the past becuase in several different culture ancient picture show figures that are relevantly the same depicting some life form coming from the sky (Aztecs).
i believe that the space program will bring a boost in our economy but the problem is that we do not know how long it will take before that boost comes and it might not come. so why do we keep putting more money in the space program.
I love your introduction. It could make someone who isn’t necessarily interested in the topic of Space Travel change their mind. It made me want to read the essay. It was very catchy!
I like that the article talkes about the advances in technology that we have. along with the advances you have mention, things like our cell phones and mp3 players and computers have also come from space travel. If i remember correctly our technoligy is a few hundred years ahead of its time. With out space travel we would not have alot of the technological advances that we have today. Space travel is definatly a great benifit
I really love this introduction. BUT you start your sentences off with but too much. “But” was never really meant to open a sentence, goes against English. However, is a good way to start a sentence such as; However, America is currently…. This states that not only was your previous statement correct, but you have something opposing to add. All in all, this is a very well written paper and I’m glad to have read it!
I really like the intro, i think it has a good hook that keeps the reader wnating to read the rest of your paper.
You need to cite the figures that you mention here. Where did you get the cost of the Ares rocket? What about the Social Security information?
