He says “My name is Paul”. If you ask him how old he is he says “My name is Paul.” He can speak any word, but he cannot use the words in correct context. Paul is seven years old, he isautistic, and he is my son. He cannot tell me what he did today because he cannot find the words. He cannot tell me the things I always expected to hear my child say. He reads out loud at the level of a scholar, but cannot tell me what the book was about. He goes to a special school and needs medical and psychological care more than many kids his age. Paul, along with other children with autism, need more funding. They need research to help find a cure. They needspecial insurance. The lack of money spent on autism makes me feel that my child is not worth it.

How much will your child be worth? With the growth of autism you may soon find out. Autism is growing at an unheard of rate. The Fighting Autism organization states that “In 1992 there were 15,000 cases of autism in U.S. schools. In the year 2008 the number of cases was over 300,000.” It would be hard to argue against autism research. There has to be a cure or at least a cause for this disorder that until recently was thought to be rare.

Children with Autism usually have no grasp on reality. A task as simple as putting on clothes can be hard for many of these children. Most things you know from instinct may take years of repetition for an autistic child to learn. Imagine your child not being able to say “Mommy, I love you.” This is what it is like for some mothers of autistic children.

An autistic child normally has an I.Q. higher than their peers, but communication can keep them from being seen or heard in many school systems. Some autistic children are thought to be retarded because they cannot express the thoughts and ideas in their head. They all have a voice that you cannot hear. All children deserve the best that this life can give them.

The research money that has been spent on children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder has risen over the past few years, but the numbers still do not add up. The Fighting Autism Organization also stated “The annual cost of education for a typical child is around $10,000, while the annual cost of education of a child with autism is estimated at $40,000. Typically a child with autism requires specialized medical treatment, which is an additional expense. Therefore, $30,000 per child with autism is an under estimate. Some parents report spending $65,000 per year.” Some parents cannot give their child special care at all because of the lack of support they are given. There is more good science than ever before and if the money was there a cure could be found. “75% to 90% of children with autism will acquire functional speech if given the appropriate treatments during preschool years.” (Toni Charman 162) Without the money to back them up these children are in the dark abyss of their minds. They are trapped and with no help may never escape.

Many theories have been voiced over the past few years. Genetics, Immunizations, poor parental care, and even prenatal vitamins were thought to blame. “What if autism is like evolution and all of the computers and games have stopped the need to communicate.” (Zakary Jordan U.S.A. student) None of these findings held true. They were just thoughts and speculations of people whose hearts were in the right place. The money has not been there for the research to be done. Sadly for many parents who need an answer, these theories must be proven.

The United States Government has tried to help many children with autism by developing No Child Left Behind. It states that every disabled child shall be given the same education as a child in regular education classes. It has improved their lives in some ways, but more care is needed outside of the classroom. They should give these children Medicaid no matter their families financial situation. It would greatly improve the lives of the childen and their families. The financial burden should be the least of the problems that parents autistic children face.

We need a place for parents to be educated. We all need to know how to improve our children’s lives and help them learn. I believe if the government would start a program for parents it could help to give a sense of normalcy to the entire family.

Think of a my child with the rest of his life ahead of him. He lives without being able to express memories of almost all of the moments he has. The memories may be there, but he cannot grasp how to convey them. Some days Paul rocks back and forth. He makes humming sounds to calm himself down in nervous situations. He should be given a chance to express himself.

Help Paul and the many other children and around the world with this disorder. Give them a voice. Speak for them. With your help they can be heard. If aid is given to all the autistic children around the world their voice could echo the Earth. The appreciation would be greater than you can imagine. Hear my son say “Hello, my name is Paul. Thank you for helping me fight autism.” These two small sentences would change our lives forever.

Wow! I say we send this to all the major drug companies!!!
I understand where you going with this. But, a lot of people don’t know that they’re the reason why they child has a disablity. It’s the genes of the parent or parents that causes problems with their children in most cases.
Paul is my child. there is NO genetic trace to my or my husband family. Autism is not genetic look it up.
I don’t understand when you say how much will your child be worth?
i did look it up. don’t no one knows what cause it
Exactly, no one knows what causes it it is not the parents. that theory was disproven. Which is my point.
How much your child is worth. Its is explained in the next few sentences. If that many children are born with asd and you have a child the chanes of you having one are great. You will find out that how much they are worth. The government will not help you in anyway unless you live in poverty. sometimes not even then. In other words: My child is worth $66 ba year and if you have an autistic child you will find out how much yours is worth also. It is a figure of speech.

i do under stand in what your trying to say and i totally agree with you when you said that money usage for viagra should instead be used for a.s.d. to help. but its not nobodys fault that your child comes out like that.
I agree it is not anyones fault. It is a research argument paper trying to show the need for money in research.
A statement about this paper in general, I have a question like how do you know if he has the reading level of a scholar if your not sure if he can read like i think it is a little bit confusing. Another comment is that the statement about children with autism usually have no grasp with reality is not true to all children with autism. My twin is autistic and he has a good idea of what reality is and what comes with it. Autism Spectrum Disorder is not the only case of autism I was a little confused at first because in the paper it seemed like you meant is as the only case. There’s several cases, I was just confused in some places.
how can you actually prove to the reader that the iq of this child is accurate? i asked that because everytime a question is being asked all the child can say is his name is paul.
How can u say that your child has an IQ of 162 when all he says is “My name is Paul?”
How does the reader know he reads at a level of a scholar but cant tell u what the book is about? How does the reader even know that he read the book?
I have a question, how do you know his reading level if all he says is “My name ia Paul”? It just makes no since to me.
My little boy is Paul. He does not just say those words. He just answers questions that he does not understand in this manner. We know his reading level because he reads out loud. He just has problems with understanding words. This site is for editing. I am rewriting the entire paper, but for my child and my sake please do not be personsal. Thank you
Good Job Shelitha. This is an excellent writing.
